Stories from Around the Country: Judge Sentences DUI Convicts to Downloading the Uber App
Municipal Court Judge Michael Cicconetti has been known to issue some bizarre sentences in the past, including requiring a man who skipped out on his taxi fare to walk 30 miles in 48 hours, and insisting that DWI drivers view dead bodies at the morgue. But when asked about his latest bit of creative sentencing, Judge Cicconetti tells the Associated Press that “It’s not one of those unusual sentences,” he said. “There’s nothing crazy about it.”
And he could be right about this one, considering how many cities now have drivers working for the popular rideshare companies Uber and Lyft.
“If you can save one person from getting another OVI,” Cicconetti told the local media, “one person from getting into an accident, one person from hurting somebody else, it makes sense. It’s just common sense. It doesn’t cost anybody anything to install it and activate it, and it’s far cheaper than paying the thousands of dollars you’d have to pay for another OVI.”
